“A networking event, organised by Offshore Energies UK, kick-started my career in the UK’s vibrant energy industry”
In October 2022, I attended a careers fair in Aberdeen organised by Offshore Energies UK (OEUK). As a Nigerian PhD student from Robert Gordon University, I was lucky to hear from a variety of industry professionals about opportunities within the UK’s energy industry, especially in the decommissioning sector.
I had the chance to talk to senior figures in the industry about my research interests and career aspirations. In particular, they talked to me about pathways into decommissioning, including how people from different backgrounds should approach companies that may have a more conventional approach to career pathways.
I remained in contact with those I met at the career fair and, after about nine weeks, had the opportunity to apply for a job share with Repsol Sinopec. After a quick recruitment process, I started my role earlier this year and have already been heavily involved in the practical planning of an upcoming decommissioning project. This has given me excellent technical experience and improved my understanding of the current regulatory requirements for CO2 storage in depleted reservoirs.
If there is one lesson I have learnt from my experience, it is to go outside of your comfort zone and take the time to speak to people within the industry from whom you can learn from. I often find networking events challenging and, like everyone, it can be hard to go up to someone new and start talking to them – however I am so glad I did. I enjoy discussing scholarship opportunities with students and young professionals, especially those from developing countries. For anyone interested in a career in the energy sector, I highly recommend attending industry events organised by Offshore Energies UK and other energy bodies.
Energy is the driver of industrialisation and development, sustaining our economies and societies. While the energy supply mix will change over the years, our demand for energy will continue to rise. For me, decommissioning will be a crucial pillar in the energy transition – helping sustainably and safely dismantle legacy oil and gas platforms as we move to a cleaner future.
