J&S Subsea

1. Tell us a bit about your organisation?

We are J+S Subsea, Aberdeen-based subsea controls engineering specialists operating around the world. We provide proactive, responsive and cost-effective solutions for the design, engineering, operational support and maintenance of subsea equipment.

2. What is keeping you busy currently?

At the moment, we have got a great spread of work going on within the oil & gas sector, including decommissioning projects, as well as some exciting work within the renewables sector. Not only are our technicians and engineers busy delivering electrical diagnostics on assets, but they are also working with international clients to develop bespoke subsea electrical distribution units and assemblies.

3. What are your specialist services?

We offer quite a range of services. These stem from:

  • Client Rep on a decommissioning project
  • Client Rep on IRM campaigns
  • Technicians and Engineers carrying out electrical diagnostics on a client’s asset
  • Working with an International client to deliver J+S designed electrical distribution units and electrical jumpers, to reinstate power to the assets
  • Renewables work and Decommissioning work
  • Design of bespoke subsea electrical distribution assemblies for international companies which includes ROV replaceable fuses
  • Onshore and offshore support for electrical integrity monitoring of replacement umbilical installations
  • FEED for Wave Energy Converter electrical dynamic umbilical connection system
  • Cable system assembly for Medium Voltage Electrical Power Take Off prototype which forms Offshore Wind farm applications
  • Qualification testing of next-generation hose designed in-house specifically for subsea cable cover hose assemblies
  • The transition to net zero is a key topic in the energy industry With this in mind, we have developed the Legacy Locker - an open industry portal for the reuse, remanufacture, and repurposing of subsea equipment. The service recycles or re-engineers existing, unwanted assets to give a cost-efficient solution as well as offering options for sale rather than scrappage.

4. How would you describe the company culture? Do you have any specific shared values?

We are a young company, established in 2020 to focus on delivering competitive and timely engineering solutions. Our mission is to collaborate and innovate. Our specialist team uses their years of industry experience to understand customer drivers and priorities and work together to deliver every time.

5. As an SME how is OEUK membership helping your business?

Being part of an industry network that shares our key values of collaboration and innovation was a natural move for us. As a relatively young business, networking with other OEUK members lets us grow our profile and build connections so we can work together to meet the industry’s net zero ambitions.

6. As an organisation, what are you most proud of?

Since our management buy-out in 2020, the company has grown significantly and recent contract wins mean our team is continuing to expand. We are moving into the controls market and also using our subsea engineering skills in other energy markets through energy transition.

This growth makes us really proud as we reflect on how far we have come. We know J+S Subsea’s great reputation is down to the enthusiasm and commitment of the team, as well as the quality of their work.

7. Is your company currently involved in the renewables market? If so, tell us more.

We’ve carried out a number of renewable projects recently. For example, we recently designed and installed a fibre optic and high voltage junction box, for 23 degrees on their bespoke tracked trencher tool. We’ve also been involved in some interesting work supporting with design prototypes in offshore wind farm applications.

It’s an important sector for us in terms of continuing growth, and we’ve just been selected for the Fit 4 Offshore Renewables (F4OR), a 12-18 month programme that we hope will support us in accessing significant supply chain opportunities.

8. What are the biggest Net-Zero changes, you have seen in our industry?

The recent focus on net zero within the industry has been welcome. Being able to support the energy transition while keeping the economy powering on is a key challenge in today’s world. Educating the wider world on our industry’s progress and the complexity of challenges we are overcoming plays an important part.

9. How do you see the industry looking in 20 years?

With new technologies and a new mindset, some of the changes we will see by the 2040s are frankly hard to imagine. But engineering solutions will always be needed, and we will be here to deliver them.

10. How is your organisation driving the transition to Net-Zero?

Our innovative Legacy Locker initiative provides an industry portal that offers refurbished capital equipment. The service of reuse, remanufacture or repurposing of existing, unwanted assets to give a cost-efficient solution as well as offering options for sale rather than scrappage.
