CAN-do approach yields environmental dividend

Study work shows smarter thinking is cutting the environmental impact of offshore drilling activities by up to 44%.

The Challenge

Technological advances reduce the environmental impact of drilling operations.

There is now industry-wide awareness of eco-friendly offshore operations and their importance in transitioning to cleaner, safer, and greener processes.

The Response

Neodrill introduced innovative tools and techniques to facilitate the installation of conductors at the pre-rig stage using light vessels and subsea conductor driving.

The company provides four solutions in its suite of CAN® (Conductor Anchor Node) technologies. Neodrill's CAN-ductor was used here and quantified the environmental gains compared to conventional well drilling practices.

The reference well for the study was the Cambo well in the UK North Sea, drilled by Siccar Point Energy. The functional unit used for the study was the drilling and casing operations for one production well.

The Result

The life cycle assessment (LCA) report, analysed and compiled by Asplan Viak – one of Norway's largest consulting engineering and architectural firms – stated that conventional well drilling techniques had a higher environmental impact across all eight study categories, which included climate change and human toxicity.

Overall, the report concluded the environmental impact of the CAN-ductor was reduced by between 21% and 44% of conventionally drilled wells.

By comparison, a combination of reduced rig time, four days shorter for the CAN-ductor – and a reduced need for materials such as cement and steel in well casings were cited as the main reasons for its strong environmental performance.

The exercise also signalled competitive advantages in cost, logistics, transport and HSE.

‘…the environmental impact of the CAN-ductor was between 21% and 44% less than that of conventionally drilled wells and we are pleased to be able to guarantee this to clients on every CAN installation. Environmental impact is a concern that will only grow in importance and we are very proud to be playing a role in helping the industry transition to cleaner, safer and greener processes.’
