DECOMMISSIONING
A North Sea FSO accumulated nearly 4,000 m3 of heavily emulsified off-spec water from pipeline and topsides flushing
The Challenge:
The incumbent service provider was unable to treat the accumulated fluids from DECOM activities and CETCO Energy Services (CETCO) were called into help.
Within 8 days of the initial contact, CETCO were bulk overboarding in-spec treated fluids from an emulsified, solids laden inventory of accumulated water as a result of pipeline flushing and legacy slop fluids.
This included mobilizing an Engineer to attend the asset, profile the fluids, make a technology recommendation as well as conduct a tie in and lay down survey. The full-scale package was then mobilised to the asset.
The alternative was to tanker these fluids and the potential to be impacted by significant Onshore treatment costs. With decades of offshore slops fluids treatment, CETCO were able to tap into their extensive experience and provide a “right first time” appropriate technology solution.
The problem:
North Sea FPSO and FSO was being decommissioned and required the slops inventory to be treated and free of hydrocarbons and gas prior to sailing to the scrapyard
• Tankering of the off-spec water was assessed to be costly by the operator and FSO owner
• Treatment of off-spec water onboard was deemed most cost effective and would adhere to strict decommissioning schedule
• Off-spec water has tight oil-in-water emulsion which the incumbent was unable to treat
CETCO were engaged on a RAPID CALL off basis to go offshore, profile the fluids, make a technology recommendation and build a package from their high flow rate rental fleet in Aberdeen
The solution:
• The CETCO Objective Root Cause Analysis (ORCA™) Service followed by mobilisation of a full-scale off-spec water treatment package
• During ORCA™ the optimal treatment method was identified using benchtop technology assessment (less than 5 days onsite)
• Within a matter of days, a full-scale treatment package was mobilised to the FSO and started overboarding the off-spec water in-spec, into the marine environment
Client saved a significant cost from the alternative tankering of the off-spec water. Savings are generally 75-90% that off onshore treatment.
