TAKING THE HEAT OUT OF HIGH TEMPERATURE WELL DRILLING OPERATIONS
OSSO applied proven techniques to deliver effective mud temperature control – and significantly improved drilling efficiency – in a project that highlighted the transferability of offshore capabilities.

The Challenge
Addressing potential inefficiencies during drilling operations in high-temperature wells.
The OSSO client, an oilfield services company, faced an increase in non-productive time when downhole temperatures exceeded the maximum operating limits of the MWD during an onshore campaign in the Middle East.
It sought a solution that would support the operation of the downhole tool within its maximum operating rated temperature.
The Response
OSSO delivered and installed a land rig closed loop mud cooler system on the long reach lateral hole sections – where the temperatures exceeded 330°F.
This approach reduced the downhole temperature so the MWD could operate safely and within its maximum operating temperatures.
OSSO personnel monitored and evaluated readings from the mud cooler and drilling parameters hourly, confirming that the equipment was working to its optimum performance levels throughout the project.
The Result
The solution delivered safety, environmental, operational and commercial gains for the client while demonstrating how specialist skills, resources and experience are transferable to onshore operations.
The drilling of hole sections was completed in a reduced number of days – equating to a 40% decrease in round trips per section drilled. The OSSO system delivered an average cost saving of $218,000 per well*.
More than that, the process:
reduced by 95% the cost of tool damage beyond repair (DBR)*
improved the overall surface working environment for the rig crew
increased the lifecycle of BOP elastomers and mud pump liners.
